The Magic of Disney Movies: A Personal Reflection
I would love to introduce my list of upcoming movies with a little personal reflection, as the films that come from Disney branded me to this date. Much like any other child, I have practically grown up on a staple of Disney classics. I recall when I first saw The Lion King. I was seven, yet I remember well the heart-shattering scene in which Simba lost his dad, Mufasa. That scene stuck in my head for many years and developed into my very first lesson concerning loss, resilience, and the importance of family. This is because Disney has a magic that teaches through its stories, not mere amusement.
I find myself revisiting the movies to this date as an adult. Well, it has been some form of tradition to view these movies with my kids. Frozen came in 2013, and my daughter was then five, but I can still remember how we sang Let It Go on repeat for months. Disney movies create bonds across generations; it is a thing which speaks to their appeal.
And with a promising lineup for 2024, the magic goes on, and honestly speaking, I can barely wait for these tales to rise-not just as a fan but as a parent, too.
1. Wish (2024)
Streaming Date: November 22, 2024
Well, Disney’s next animation has raised several eyebrows, titled Wish. Co-directed by Chris Buck himself, co of Frozen, along with Fawn Veerasunthorn, the movie fetches inspiration from that one thing that has made Disney what it is today: the idea of wishing upon a star. The story follows Asha, a kind-spirited and big-dreaming 17-year-old girl, set in an exquisitely lush kingdom ensconced in belief-that every wish really does come true.
Within this book, Asha does something very true: making a wish upon the stars in order to change her life and her kingdom. Destiny, in its twirls, delivers this wish in the most unexpected form. Together with this mischievous star now taking real-life form, she goes on a quest full of humor, heart, and adventure. Still, the most exciting factor for the fans is the style of animation since this film combined traditional 2D with the latest 3D techniques.
Why It’s Great: The idea is so cute, but with Ariana DeBose voicing Asha and Alan Tudyk lending his voice to her loyal goat sidekick Valentino, things just get really interesting here. That the music came to us from the Frozen team-aka Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, among others-means the songs from Wish will no doubt keep playing in our heads for years to come.
2. Mufasa: The Lion King (2024)
Release Date: July 5, 2024
Disney’s photorealistic refit of The Lion King reached box office phenomenon status during the summer of 2019 with worldwide grosses exceeding $1.6 billion. In its wake, Disney is back in the Pride Lands with Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the 2019 movie. It will be a completely new origin film for one of the favorite Disney characters: Mufasa, the noble father of Simba. The new film will be directed by Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins from the remarkable film Moonlight.
Overview: The film follows Mufasa from cub to king of Pride Lands. It showcases all his early years, the relationships that molded him, and exactly how he learned all those lessons that made him the king we loved in the original Lion King.
Exciting because: Ever since Barry Jenkins jumped onto this project, it was known this would be something more than a shallow film. It had to dive deep into storytelling and had to be emotionally charged pending the expected arc. CGI visuals are breathtaking, shown in 2019 with Lion King, so anticipation will come up to see more. The movie is going to explore more into the history of Pride Lands and introduce new characters in building and expanding the world of the Lion King.
Personal Story: The Power of Mufasa’s Legacy
My first view of The Lion King, when I was a child, was emotionally deep because the death of Mufasa is one of those moments which happened during our childhood. Afterwards, the whole experience was sealed with me when, many years later, I watched it with my children. My son, who was then about five years old, had the same effect of that scene that I had back in the day. Suffice it to say, the effect Mufasa had on Simba and for that matter, most of the people who saw it did only made the dive into Mufasa’s story all so interesting.
3. Snow White
Release Date: March 22, 2024
For 2024, live-action Snow White marked the extension of the trend of Disney into converting all their animated classics into live-action movies. From the director of The Amazing Spider-Man, Marc Webb, this live-action adaptation brings life into the story that launched Disney’s feature-length animation legacy way back in 1937. Although live-action adaptations of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin raked in some phenomenal box office collections, there is indeed a lot at stake as far as Snow White is concerned.
Summary of Plot: Although the plot details have been kept close to the vest, if fortune would have it that way, this outline for the new storyline would stick to the original tale where Snow White befriends seven dwarfs, outruns her evil stepmother, and finds her way to her prince. The movie intended for today’s audience will add modern renewals and developed arcs for the characters.
Why It’s Exciting: It stars Rachel Zegler, the leading lady of West Side Story, as Snow White, and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Just that has raised eyebrows for the movie, considering Gal Gadot’s charisma on screen. New songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul make sure there are new musical numbers alongside the classic “Someday My Prince Will Come.”.
4. Elio
– March 1, 2024 Pixar’s newest animated film, Elio, will no doubt be a real differentiator in melding science fiction with sappy emotions. From the helms of Coco’s Adrian Molina comes this sci-fi about an 11-year-old boy who accidentally gets beamed onto a strange planet, where he is mistakenly taken to be Earth’s ambassador.
Overview: Elio is a dreamy kid who always has his head in the clouds. So naturally, when he gets beamed aboard an alien spaceship, it’s his job to prevent intergalactic catastrophe, mollify the alien government-and prove it to everyone, especially himself-that he has what it takes to be Earth’s ambassador for the galaxy.
Why it’s exciting: Pixar, over the years, has gained a name for releasing some really great animated films that quite nicely transcend barriers of age. Elio promises a space adventure theme that is bound to bring kaleidoscopic visuals and teeming imaginative world-building into the fold. It surely doles out a fable about an outsider learning to love what makes him unique in a storyline tugging heartstrings not too different from other great Pixar films like Up and Inside Out.
Personal Connection: Embracing Uniqueness
Well, ever since I was a kid-just growing up-there always seemed like one of those outsiders who looks in, especially at school. Movies like Toy Story and Finding Nemo actually resonated with me, and those characters celebrated their differences. Elio feels like that spirit will be captured and go on to inspire the next generation to find their voice.
5. Inside Out 2 (2024)
Release Date: June 14, 2024
In 2024, the sequel to one of the most loved Pixar movies, Inside Out, will be hitting theaters. This was directed by Kelsey Mann and brought into light the new set of emotions, challenges, and problems faced by Riley as she grew up to be a teen.
Plot Overview: Inside Out 2 is now seeing Riley as a teenager, meaning new emotions, new troubles, and even more complication inside her head. The original film followed core emotions like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. It is promised that this new film will add new emotions mirroring the tumultuous experience of adolescence.
Why It’s Exciting: Quite literally, the fans of the first are dying to see just how different the emotional journey of Riley is going to be. Not only highly critically acclaimed for ingenuity in tackling mental health and emotional intelligence, one could only fathom this sequel diving deeper. With voice talents including Amy Poehler, returning to her role as Joy, the audience might find themselves poignantly laughing at growing up.
Personal Story: Teaching Emotions to My Kids
Inside Out was the revelation of being a parent. It gave me that ingenious tool when it came to teaching my kids about their emotions. The day after seeing it, my then-seven-year-old daughter started naming her feelings: “I’m feeling a little Sadness today.” And it opened a great conversation. I really look forward to seeing Inside Out 2 with her now that she is a teen herself.
Next Magical Year Ending:
If trends are anything to go by, then 2024 promises to be quite a forgettable year for any Disney fan. From the heartwarming animated tale of Inside Out 2 and a wish to epic live-action tales like Snow White and Mufasa: The Lion King, there’s indeed something for everyone. Apart from being assured of great visuals and wonderful stories, these movies promise deeper emotional lessons that cut across generations.
Disney magic has grown up with me, and now it’s something, as a parent, I am going to look forward to sharing with my family. From singing along to new songs in Wish-perhaps even crying with Mufasa: The Lion King-to reflecting on my own emotional growth with Inside Out 2, no doubt 2024 is going to be filled with lifetime Disney memories.
Mark your calendars and get the popcorn ready, as Disney 2024 promises to be an affair nobody would want to miss.
